Mixed Media Flower Painting "BLAZE" Original Art by Carol Ann Webster Artist

This piece speaks to my heart in so many ways. I created "Blaze" as an expanded vision of one of my beloved ecoprints, challenging myself to transform something intimate and small into a bold 20x20 inch statement.
The background tells its own story - fragments of vintage Popular Mechanics magazines that my dad collected in the 1930s and 40s. When you look closely, you can see how these texts create a subtle grid pattern beneath everything else. Tea bag paper flowers and leaves, paint, glaze, and text all speak together to create layers of color, meaning, and visual depth.

20×20×1.5 inch wrapped canvas. The background is a pale green canvas with old magazine text glued down. It’s been white-washed with a white glaze.

Mixed Media Flower Painting "Blue Vase " Original Art by Carol Ann Webster Artist

I inherited a trunk full of Popular Mechanics magazines from my dad. Now I add pages from them to my art as the background. This vase of flowers was inspired by an ecoprint on paper that I made using cosmos from my garden. I feel a connection to the way the water caused the pigment to flow around on the paper. I tried to capture that same movement using tea bag paper, paint, and digital transfers of the flowers themselves.

Free Tutorial Cyanotype Magic: Transforming Drywall Tape in Art Journaling With Carol Ann Webster

If you’ve wondered about using the cyanotype process in your art/mixed-media journaling, learn how I use cyanotype on drywall tape for stunning additions to my journal. I’m using paper joint tape or drywall tape to make paper strips for my art journal. These are so easy to make and use in my fabric-page art journal. I stitch them down using my sewing machine.
